Drilling in wood – pre-drilling
Kranj , 02.02.10
Small screws can usually be fastened in wood without pre-drilling. Large screws are fastened better, if you pre-drill a hole. Predrilling means that you drill a hole with smaller diameter in which you can fasten a screw. Advantages: it prevents crushing of soft wood; hard wood should be pre-drilled, if you want to achieve good fastening.

Drill bits for various materials
Various materials (e.g. wood, metal or stone) require different drill bit types.
Drilling in masonry: impact drill or rotary hammer is required for drilling in masonry made of stone or concrete. Beside the right drill, you also need drill bits for drilling in concrete. Such a drill bit has soldered – in carbide plates on the drill bit tip.
Drilling in glass and ceramic tiles: special rotary ceramic drill bit is required for drilling tiles, ceramics and marble and glass drill bit is required for drilling glass, bottles and porcelain
Drilling in metal: HSS drill bits are suitable for drilling non-ferrous metals, iron and alloyed carbon and plain steel.
Drilling in wood: The brad point bits and spade bits are usually used for drilling in wood. The brad point bits with their sharp point in the middle and four sharp corners enable accurate drilling. Spade bits are used for rough boring. They tend to cause splintering when they emerge from the work piece.
