Nickel-cadmium batteries (NiCd) are most generally used batteries for cordless tools. They are lightweight and small, strong and durable, have high power output and allow for a large number of charge and discharge cycles. They function in any position. Their weakness is that they self discharge while not in use. Due to their toxic heavy metal compounds, they must be disposed of in an environment-friendly manner.
